Re-creating Your Career

An adult is taking Re-creating Your Career online course

Overview

The pandemic years have changed the way we live and work. The overarching goal of this course is to increase work performance and employee satisfaction in the organization.

This self-paced course consists of three modules. They are developed with Articulate Rise and nested in Canvas LMS. I designed and developed most assets during the M.S. in the Instructional Design and Technology program at the University of Maryland Global Campus in 2022.

Analysis

The target audience is experienced employees at Wide Field. Their learning gap is mid-life career planning: most individuals have wishful thinking, but when it comes to taking action, they often experience not being able to hold onto their goals. Some processes are required to turn them into more concrete goals by tapping into the learner’s intrinsic motivation.

The step-by-step process guides learners to reflect on their careers from different angles. Learners analyze their assets and predict situations in future years to plan their career blueprint with a well-balanced life and work.

Design

This storyboard describes an animated explainer video of the SMART goals embedded in Module #3.

I produced a total of 5 videos for the course with closed captions and transcripts to cover ADA compliance in the US, aligning with WCAG.

SMART Goals Video
(with ADA compliance)

I keep track of typical video production workflow to revise the efficiency.

For this video, after writing a script, I recorded a voice-over, produced an animation video adhering to Mayer’s 12 Principles for Multimedia Learning, recorded it by screencasting (a workaround of a free version of the tool, which didn’t allow downloading), and produced a descriptive transcript.

This video is uploaded on YouTube to provide learners
options of closed captions, playing speed, and language translation.

This 3.5-minute video has audio.

Goal and System Video
(with Section 508 compliance)

The video has open captions in which the video narration appears as text at the appropriate time and gives access to people regardless of abilities and conditions.

The audio description (AD) follows the main narration to describe visual elements, providing access to people who are blind or visually impaired. In this video, I differentiated with a female voice as the main narrator and a male voice as the AD.

Develop eLearning Modules

Challenge:

Since the course content was authored with Rise 360 and the link was inserted in the Canvas LMS, I had to think through how to navigate learners to the next activities and submit assignments.

Implement Full Course

Solution:

I created a short introduction video to invite learners to walk through the Canvas interface to get used to the platform. In Rise, I added navigation with screenshots to show where to submit assignments.

Result

A self-scorecard of this course with the Online SUNY Course Quality Review (OSCQR) rubric is attached to the capstone presentation page to list items that require iterative reviews to ensure overall quality. Learners’ responses to the course evaluation will be integrated into the subsequent version updates.
